Introduction. Myelodysplastic syndrome is a blood disease which is characterized by abnormalities in the formation of blood cells in the bone marrow. Symptoms of the disease may include weakness, anaemia, infections and a bleeding tendency. MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome) can lead to blood cancers such as leukaemia. The treatment of MDS depends on its severity and the results of diagnostic tests. It may include pharmacological therapy, bone marrow transplantation procedures and, in the case of advanced disease, palliative care. Case report. A 40-year-old man diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome with excess blasts. The patient was qualified for hematopoietic cell transplantation, the donor of which was the patient’s daughter. Aim. The aim of the study is to pay attention to the role of the nurse in the treatment of patients with myelodysplastic syndrome, in establishing nursing diagnoses, presentation of a treatment plan, performing tasks, preparing the patient for self-care and assessing the tasks performed. Conclusions. A patient suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome requires support and help that will allow him to regain self-confidence, adapt to the new situation and achieve emotional balance. Educating the patient and their relatives is a key task of the nurse, especially regarding problems that may arise after bone marrow transplantation, how to deal with them and the possibility of obtaining personalized support.
